TS Đinh Văn Sơn khẳng định hợp tác quốc tế là trụ cột chiến lược tại Petrovietnam

Dr. Dinh Van Son: International Cooperation Remains a Strategic Pillar at Petrovietnam

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Vietnam's first commercial oil extraction from the Bach Ho oil field—discovered and developed by the Vietsovpetro Joint Venture (a member of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group - Petrovietnam)—PetroTimes conducted an in-depth interview with Dr. Dinh Van Son, former Party Secretary of the Petrovietnam Party Committee and former Member of the Petrovietnam Council of Members, regarding the corporation's international cooperation activities throughout its development process.

Historical Context and Significance of the Bach Ho Oil Field

The Bach Ho oil field, discovered by the Vietsovpetro Joint Venture in 1975, marked a significant milestone in Vietnam's oil and gas industry. The first commercial oil was extracted on June 3, 1978, opening a new chapter for the country's nascent oil and gas industry.

Over the past 40 years, Bach Ho has become one of Vietnam's largest and most important oil fields, contributing significantly to national energy security and the country's socio-economic development.

International Development Cooperation - A Survival Strategy for Petrovietnam

According to Dr. Dinh Van Son, international cooperation was identified early on as one of the strategic pillars in Petrovietnam's development. "From the very beginning, Petrovietnam recognized that to develop a nascent oil and gas industry, we could not go it alone," Dr. Son shared.

International cooperation has not only brought substantial investment capital but has also facilitated the transfer of advanced technology, management experience, and high-quality human resource training—factors critical for a high-technology industry like oil and gas.

Lessons Learned from International Cooperation

Dr. Dinh Van Son shared valuable lessons learned from Petrovietnam's international cooperation experience:

  • Respect national sovereignty while remaining flexible in negotiations: Petrovietnam has always prioritized national interests but knows how to be flexible in negotiations to achieve favorable cooperation terms.
  • Select strategic partners: Prioritize partners with experience, advanced technology, and long-term commitment.
  • Effective technology transfer: Focus not only on exploitation cooperation but also on mastering and absorbing technology.
  • Develop human resources: Invest in training technical and managerial staff to gradually achieve operational self-sufficiency.
  • Build extensive networks: Establish relationships with major global oil and gas corporations to create diverse cooperation opportunities.

Challenges and Opportunities in the New Context

Dr. Dinh Van Son also analyzed the new challenges Petrovietnam faces in international cooperation:

"The world is rapidly transitioning to renewable energy, and traditional global oil and gas corporations are undergoing major restructuring. Additionally, geopolitical tensions and global energy price fluctuations present significant challenges," Dr. Son noted.

However, according to Dr. Son, these also present opportunities for Petrovietnam to diversify its cooperation activities, participate in clean energy projects, develop high-quality human resources, and enhance Vietnam's position on the global energy map.

The Role of International Cooperation in the Development Strategy until 2030

According to its development strategy until 2030, Petrovietnam has identified international cooperation as playing a key role with the following focuses:

  • Strengthen cooperation in oil and gas exploration and exploitation in new blocks, particularly in deep continental shelves.
  • Expand cooperation in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to meet Vietnam's growing energy demands.
  • Cooperate in developing renewable energy projects such as wind and solar power.
  • Participate more deeply in the global oil and gas value chain.
  • Enhance cooperation in training, research, and technology development.

Future Vision

Concluding the interview, Dr. Dinh Van Son expressed confidence in Petrovietnam's future in international cooperation: "With 40 years of international cooperation experience, a well-trained workforce, and extensive networks, I believe Petrovietnam will continue to be one of the leading enterprises in the region, making significant contributions to national energy security and sustainable development."

He emphasized that in the context of constant global changes, maintaining and developing effective international cooperation is not just a choice but a necessity for Petrovietnam to maintain its position and continue growing.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the first commercial oil, reviewing Petrovietnam's international cooperation journey serves not only to recognize achievements but also as an opportunity to draw lessons and guide development strategy in the new phase, ensuring Vietnam's strong position on the regional and global oil and gas map.
