Chairmen of TKV and EVN Inspect Coal Supply Operations at Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company
Joint Working Group of Two Major Corporations Meets in Vinh Long Province to Ensure Fuel for Power Production
On [date], in Vinh Long province, Mr. Dang Hoang An - Chairman of the Board of Members of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and Mr. Ngo Hoang Ngan - Chairman of the Board of Members of Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Corporation (TKV) led a joint working group to meet with Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company - Power Generation Corporation 1 regarding the operational status of their power units and coal supply assurance for electricity production.
The inspection took place against the backdrop of Vietnam facing numerous challenges in ensuring energy security, particularly regarding coal supply for thermal power plants - the primary source for the national power system.
Background of the Working Visit
Vietnam is currently experiencing rapid economic development, leading to increased electricity demand. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the total installed capacity of the national power system reached approximately 69,000 MW by the end of 2022, with thermal coal power accounting for about 35%. It is projected that by 2030, this proportion will remain high to ensure national energy security.
| Vietnam's Power Development Situation 2020-2023 | |
|---|---|
| Total Installed Capacity (MW) | 69,000 |
| Thermal coal power proportion | 35% |
| Thermal gas power proportion | 15% |
| Hydropower proportion | 30% |
| Solar power, wind power proportion | 20% |
About Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company
Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company is one of Vietnam's key thermal coal power plants, belonging to Power Generation Corporation 1 (EVN Power Generation Corporation 1). The plant has a total installed capacity of 1,200 MW (2 units of 600MW each), using coal as its primary fuel.
According to the company's report, in 2022, Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company produced approximately 7.5 billion kWh of electricity, making a significant contribution to the national power system. However, the company also faces numerous challenges in ensuring stable coal supply, particularly in the context of strong fluctuations in global coal prices and increasing domestic coal demand.
Working Group's Discussion Content
During the meeting, the Chairmen of TKV and EVN received a report from the leadership of Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company regarding the operational status of power units, coal assurance for production, and difficulties encountered during implementation.
According to the report, Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company has implemented numerous solutions to ensure coal supply, including:
- Diversifying coal supply from various suppliers
- Strengthening coal reserves to proactively respond to unexpected situations
- Applying technology to optimize coal utilization processes
- Enhancing coordination with TKV to ensure stable coal supply
Mr. Dang Hoang An - Chairman of EVN emphasized: "Thermal coal power remains the main source of supply for the national power system in the current period. Therefore, ensuring a stable supply of quality coal for thermal power plants is the top priority task, determining national energy security."
TKV's Role in the Coal Supply Chain
Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Corporation (TKV) is the leading coal unit in Vietnam, responsible for mining and supplying coal to domestic thermal power plants. TKV currently manages approximately 20 coal mines with a total mining capacity of about 40 million tons/year.
| TKV's Coal Production Volume 2020-2023 | |
|---|---|
| Year | Production Volume (million tons) |
| 2020 | 38.5 |
| 2021 | 39.2 |
| 2022 | 40.1 |
| 2023 (projected) | 41.5 |
Mr. Ngo Hoang Ngan - Chairman of TKV stated: "TKV has always identified ensuring coal supply for thermal power plants as a central task. We are striving to increase production while diversifying coal supply from different regions to ensure safety for the national power system."
Challenges and Solutions
Both EVN and TKV acknowledge that Vietnam is facing numerous challenges in ensuring coal supply for thermal power plants:
- Increasing domestic coal demand due to economic development and rising electricity needs
- Strong fluctuations in global coal prices, affecting electricity production costs
- Limited coal transportation infrastructure from mines to power plants
- Pressure on environmental protection in coal mining and utilization processes
To address these challenges, the two corporations have agreed to implement comprehensive solutions:
- Strengthening cooperation between TKV and EVN in coal supply planning
- Investing in upgrading coal transportation infrastructure
- Applying new technologies to improve coal utilization efficiency
- Promoting research and development of renewable energy to reduce long-term dependence on coal
Conclusion of the Working Visit
Concluding the working visit, the Chairmen of TKV and EVN agreed to strengthen closer coordination in ensuring coal supply for thermal power plants. Both corporations also committed to reporting to the Government and relevant ministries about difficulties and obstacles to receive appropriate support policies.
Duyen Hai Thermal Power Company also committed to continue efforts to ensure stable operation of its power units while enhancing energy conservation and efficient coal use to contribute to national energy security.
This working visit demonstrates the special attention of EVN and TKV leadership to fuel supply assurance for power production, a key factor determining Vietnam's socio-economic development in the current period.
