If the Strait of Hormuz is blocked for a few weeks, will Vietnam face the risk of electricity shortages, increased gas prices and the biggest economic shock in many years?

Amid the escalating Middle East conflict, the story of energy independence is no longer a slogan but is becoming a "survival shield" for the entire Vietnamese economy.

Petrovietnam and many energy experts have emphasized that accelerating E&P search, exploration and exploitation of oil and gas is a strategic step to reduce import dependence and maintain macroeconomic stability.

Pressures are present

Risk Factors for Vietnam
Brent oil price increased sharply. Logistics, transportation, and production costs increased
Middle East conflict Risk of LNG and oil supply disruption
Strong USD Pressure on energy imports increases
Dependent on imported fuel. Vulnerable to global price shock

Vietnam is facing the same problem as many Asian countries such as Japan, Korea and India when most of its energy still depends on the international market.

While Saudi Aramco, QatarEnergy or ADNOC continuously expand exploitation to maintain their global energy position, Vietnam is also forced to speed up gas, LNG and offshore exploitation projects if it does not want to be passive in the future.

The true role of E&P in the economy

Area of Impact
Electrification Keep the background power source stable
Heavy industry Reduce pressure on fuel costs
Petrochemical Actively producing raw materials
Ngan Policy to increase foreign exchange revenue
National security Reduce import dependence

But in return, the value created for the electricity, gas, petrochemical and export chains can be much greater for decades.

It is worth noting that in recent years, Petrovietnam has maintained stable exploitation output even though many traditional oil and gas fields have entered a period of natural decline.

This shows that Vietnam's operating capacity and optimal exploitation are significantly better than many oil and gas enterprises in the ASEAN region.

Vital goals for the coming period

β€’ Promote gas exploitation for LNG power
β€’ Speed up the Block B - O Mon chain
β€’ Expand imported LNG infrastructure
β€’ Increase strategic petroleum reserves
β€’ Invest in deep offshore drilling technology

If it does not speed up now, Vietnam may have to compete directly with Japan, Korea and China for LNG during periods of global supply crisis.

In a volatile world, any country that can maintain energy will maintain growth, production and social stability.
