Is this a "life and death card" to help the Southeast avoid a gas shortage shock in the next few years when many large mines are in sharp decline?

On May 22, 2026, PV GAS officially approved key content related to the Contract for connection and operation of Su Tu Trang project phase 2B of Lot 15-1. This is no longer a normal technical contract but is considered an extremely important link to maintain energy security in the Southeast region in the context of domestic gas output decreasing rapidly year by year.
According to assessments from Petrovietnam, the Su Tu Trang 2B project is expected to supply about 17.05 billion m3 of gas and 74 million barrels of oil and condensate during its exploitation life cycle.

Role of compensating for decline in old gas sources
What attracts the market's attention is the time the project is promoted
A series of large gas fields in Vietnam are entering a period of natural decline after many years of exploitation. Meanwhile, the demand for electricity, gas, industry and petrochemicals in the South continues to increase very strongly.
Compare energy supply pressure in the South
| Factor | Previous period | Current |
|—|—|
| Domestic gas sources | Abundant | Clear deterioration |
| LNG gas power | Low Dependency | Increase quickly |
| PressureLNG import force | Not yet grown up | Very high |
| Risk of electricity shortage | Average | High heat season |
Many experts believe that Su Tu Trang 2B will play the role of an "energy bridge" before the imported LNG chain and new gas power projects are fully operational.
If the project is behind schedule, Vietnam may have to sharply increase LNG imports at significantly higher costs, directly affecting electricity prices and industrial production.
Another notable point
In Southeast Asia, many countries such as Thailand or Indonesia are also facing a decline in natural gas output from traditional fields. The global LNG competition is therefore becoming more and more fierce.
Country Current Trends
Vietnam Increases LNG imports
Thailand Shortage of domestic gas
Indonesia Production gradually decreased
Malaysia Focuses on LNG exports
With PV GAS's new move, investors are hoping that Vietnam's oil and gas group can enter a new growth cycle thanks to a series of major gas and power projects being reactivated.
The big question now is no longer "do it or not?"
It's whether Vietnam can keep up with the pace of increasing energy demand before the pressure of shortages explodes
