Is this the step that makes Vietnam quietly enter the "global LNG game" while Europe and China are competing for each liquefied gas ship?
Petrovietnam has just had an extremely noteworthy working session with Novatek - a large Russian LNG corporation, opening up the possibility of deep cooperation on LNG supply chains, port warehouses, energy logistics and emission reduction solutions.
In the context of increasingly hot electricity and LNG prices and global energy security pressures, this move is seen as a signal that Vietnam wants to accelerate its strategy of diversifying supply sources instead of depending on a single region.
The special point is that Novatek is currently one of the "LNG giants" with extremely strong expansion rates after QatarEnergy, Shell and TotalEnergies in the Asian market.
TABLE OF COOPERATION ITEMS MENTIONED
Category Strategic significance
LNG supply chain Stable long-term gas import sources
LNG terminal Reduces pressure from lack of infrastructure
Regasification Serving LNG gas power
Energy Logistics Optimize transportation and storage
Reducing emissions Towards green energy standards
One of Vietnam's biggest current problems is that electricity demand is increasing rapidly but the stable base power source is under extreme pressure.
LNG gas power is considered a "bridge" between coal thermal power and renewable energy because:
• Lower emissions than coal
• Start up faster
• Suitable for electrical load compensationn solar and wind power
• Reduce the risk of widespread power shortages

Cheniere Energy US LNG exports to Asia
If LNG projects in Vietnam accelerate strongly in the period 2026–2030, a series of gas power centers and LNG ports could explode in:
• Ba Ria Vung Tau
• Hai Phong
• Quang Ninh
• Long An
• Quang Ngai
Notably, LNG is no longer a "mere energy" story but has become a huge geopolitical competition.
After the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Europe rushed to buy LNG, causing spot prices to increase steeply. At times, Asian LNG prices exceeded more than 1 million VND per converted MMBtu, creating huge pressure on importing economies.
ASIA ENERGY PRESSURE BOARD

Japan Depends on imported LNG
Korea Lack of long-term resources
China increased buying strongly
Vietnam is expanding LNG infrastructure
Thailand Domestic gas decline
Many experts believe that if Vietnam builds a complete LNG ecosystem including warehouses, logistics, electricity and gas trading centers, it can become a "new energy hub" of Southeast Asia in the future.
What the market is most interested in right now:
• Vietnam will import LNG from Russia on a large scale
• Is the long-term LNG price competitive enough with US and Qatar LNG?
• Will LNG gas power projects be cleared of procedures?c is faster
• And is this the beginning of a new "energy investment super cycle" in Vietnam?
