If everyone plants just one tree and changes one bad habit towards the environment, can Vietnam become one of the greenest countries in Asia in just one generation?
On May 28, 2026 in Ho Chi Minh City, the national painting competition "Green City - Beautiful as in a picture" was officially launched, combined with the project of planting 1,000 trees in response to World Environment Day on June 5. The event was initiated by Miss Environment World 2023 Nguyen Thanh Ha, attracting a large number of experts, schools, businesses and environment-loving communities to participate.
The special thing about the program does not lie in the awards or simple works of art. The greatest value lies in turning awareness into practical action.
A picture can inspire
A tree can change the living environment
A young generation can change the future of the country
Why This Program Is Highly Rated
Over the years, most environmental campaigns have focused on propaganda. However, this program combines education, art and practical action at the same time.

When Art Becomes a Tool for Social Change
According to Nguyen Thanh Ha's sharing
“Each painting can start from a small brushstroke but has the power to awaken a great consciousness in the community”
This message reflects the modern environmental education trend in the world.
Instead of just conveying dry numbers about pollution, climate change or biodiversity loss, art helps people feel the problem emotionally.
Many international studies show that children who access environmental education through art are more likely to maintain long-term green behavior than through traditional propaganda methods.
How Meaningful Are One Thousand Trees?
Although the number of 1,000 trees is not too large when viewed on a national scale, the environmental impact is very noticeable.
Environmental value table estimated from 1,000 mature trees
Value Index
CO₂ absorption per year About 20 - 25 tons
Oxygen creates tens of thousands of indirect beneficiaries
Reduce urban heat by 2 - 5°C in areas with high tree density
Significantly reduces fine dust in residential areas
Increases biodiversity Attracts birds and beneficial insects
This is the reason why many large cities around the world are investing billions of dollars in urban greening.
What Vietnam Is Facing
Large cities such as Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are under pressure from
Urban heat island effect
Air pollution
Lack of green space
Waterlogging due to concretechemistry
Decreasing green area per capita
A modern city not only has high-rise buildings or commercial centers but also needs a green ecosystem to maintain quality of life.
Green Actions Are Encouraged
The contest directs participants to reflect positive actions such as
Plant trees
Save water
Garbage classification
Reduce use of single-use plastic
Protect rivers and lakes
Build green living space
These are all small actions, but when done by millions of people, they will have a huge impact.
From a Competition to a National Movement
It is worth noting that the Organizing Committee does not consider this just an art playground.
The long-term goal is to form a community movement about green lifestyle, where students and people participate in protecting the environment with specific actions every day.
The most repeated message at the launching ceremony was:
“A green city is not built with concrete or steel glass, but is built from green consciousness in every human heart”
Perhaps this is also the answer to the sustainable development problem that every modern city is pursuing.
