If Türkiye controls both the gas transportation route and the strategic electricity corridor connecting Asia with Europe, could it become the region's new "energy king" in the next few years?

A strategic move just announced by Türkiye and Azerbaijan is attracting special attention from the global energy community. At Baku Energy Week, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed that the two countries are studying the construction of a large-scale power corridor connecting Azerbaijan with Southeast Europe through Turkish territory.

It is worth noting that Mr. Bayraktar describes this project as "the electric version of TANAP".

TANAP is currently one of the most important strategic gas routes in the world, transporting gas from Azerbaijan through Türkiye to Europe.

If the new plan is successful, electricity will follow a similar path.

COMPARISON OF TWO ENERGY CORRIDORS

Current TANAP criteria New power corridor
Energy Natural Gas Electricity
Origin Azerbaijan Azerbaijan
Turkey Turkey Transit
Destination Europe Southeast Europe
Objective: Gas security, Electricity security
Meaning: Reduce dependence on Russia Diversify power sources

WHY EUROPE NEEDS THIS CORRIDOR

After the energy crisis lasting from 2022, many European countries realize that depending on one sourceSingle supply noise is extremely risky.

Russia used to be the largest energy supplier to many EU countries.

However, geopolitical fluctuations have forced Europe to look for alternative sources.

Azerbaijan has emerged as a strategic partner thanks to its favorable geographical location and abundant energy resources.

Not only gas, Azerbaijan is also investing heavily in large-scale wind and solar power.

ADVANTAGES OF AZERBAIJAN

Potential Category
Caspian Sea offshore wind power Very large
Solar power growing rapidly
Energy export infrastructure is expanding
European connection Growing stronger

⚡ Türkiye WANT TO BECOME AN ENERGY CENTER

For many years, Ankara has pursued the goal of turning the country into an energy transit center between Asia and Europe.

Currently, Türkiye owns many strategic energy lines such as

✅ TANAP

✅ TurkStream

✅ Blue Stream

✅ Large-scale LNG ports

If a transcontinental super electricity corridor is added, Türkiye's role in the European energy system will increase sharply.

POTENTIAL IMPACT

Subject Benefits
Europe Diverse power sources
Azerbaijan Increases export revenue
Türkiye Strengthens its position as an energy center
Investors Infrastructure development opportunities
Balkan region Power supply is more stable

WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT

According to analysts, the new power corridor is not simply a power transmission project.

This could become part of the strategy to reshape the European energy map.

If TANAP ever changes the gas market tNew power corridors could play a similar role in electricity markets over the next decade.

In the context of strong demand for green electricity, explosive growth of electric vehicles and AI data centers consuming huge amounts of electricity, cross-border power transmission routes like the Türkiye-Azerbaijan project can become as important a strategic asset as traditional oil and gas pipelines.

A question being asked by experts is whether this electricity corridor will become "TANAP 2.0" and open up new energy competition between the Middle East, the Caspian Sea and Europe?
