USDA and IRRI Delegation Conducts Working Visit at Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant

On June 26th, Petrovietnam Fertilizer and Chemical Corporation (PVCFC), a subsidiary of Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam), welcomed and held discussions with a working delegation from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) at the Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant. The meeting aimed to promote cooperation in sustainable agriculture and the development of advanced fertilizer technologies.

Background of the Visit

The visit by the USDA and IRRI delegation to the Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant takes place as Vietnam intensifies its transition toward sustainable agriculture, the application of high technology, and the export of high-quality agricultural products. This collaboration marks a significant step in connecting American agricultural technology expertise with Vietnam's development needs.

The Ca Mau Fertilizer Plant, with its advanced production technology and large-scale operations, is considered one of Vietnam's leading fertilizer production facilities. The selection of this location by USDA and IRRI for their working visit demonstrates particular interest in potential cooperation in the field of high-tech fertilizers and the development of new food grain varieties.

Detailed Meeting Proceedings

During the meeting, both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on various topics including:

  • High-efficiency, environmentally friendly fertilizer production technologies
  • Application of biotechnology in developing climate-resilient rice varieties
  • Agricultural quality management and safety systems
  • Policies to support farmers' access to new technologies
  • Potential cooperation projects in the fertilizer and rice seed sectors

Representatives from PVCFC provided a detailed introduction to the plant, its production technologies, and the fertilizer products currently being manufactured. Additionally, PVCFC shared its development orientation for specialized fertilizer products for different types of crops in Vietnam.

Significance of the Cooperation

The collaboration between PVCFC with USDA and IRRI holds particular importance as Vietnam faces numerous agricultural challenges, including climate change, soil degradation, and the need to increase crop yields.

With over 50 years of experience in rice research and development, IRRI can provide new rice varieties with salt tolerance, drought resistance, and high yield potential. Meanwhile, USDA can offer support in terms of policy, quality management procedures, and advanced agricultural technologies.
