Vietnam has just marked a strategic turning point in its energy transition journey when the German International Cooperation Organization GIZ and Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company BSR officially signed an agreement to develop the Power-to-Liquid pilot project, a technology to convert renewable electricity into synthetic liquid fuel.

This is not just a technology project. This is the first step for Vietnam to participate in the race to produce sustainable aviation fuel and green methanol, products considered "green gold" of a low-carbon economy in the coming decades.

What is Power-to-Liquid

Power-to-Liquid is the technology used

1. Renewable electricity from wind power and solar power
2. Green hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water
3. Carbon captured from biomass or air

These three components are synthesized to create

* e-SAF, sustainable aviation fuel
* e-Methanol, green fuel for marine transportation
* e-Fuel, synthetic fuel for industry and transport

A special feature is that the fuel produced is almost carbon neutral, in line with the net zero emissions target.
