When ASEAN is in need of electricity for a digital economy worth $2,000 billion and Russia owns 60% of the gas reserves of the Eurasian space, is a new energy alliance forming and changing the global energy map in the next decade?

At the Summit commemorating the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-Russia relations taking place on June 18, 2026, leaders of both sides agreed to strongly promote cooperation in the fields of oil and gas, LNG, civil nuclear power, renewable energy and energy transition.

This is considered a strategic step in a context where the world is facing many geopolitical uncertainties, supply chain disruptions and the increasingly urgent need to ensure energy security.

Eurasian Space Scale Is Becoming The New Center Of The World

Scale Index
Population 3.4 billion people
Global GDP 25%
World trade More than 15%
50% of global oil reserves
Gas reserves 60% of the world
Agricultural land area is over 25% of the world

ASEAN currently has a GDP of about 4,000 billion USD and is the 5th largest economy in the world. According to many predictionso, ASEAN can rise to the 4th position globally before 2030.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to play the role of an energy power with the world's leading oil and gas resources, LNG, uranium and nuclear power technology.

Energy Becomes the Pillar of Strategic Cooperation

ASEAN and Russian leaders agreed to expand cooperation in five key areas

Traditional oil and gas

LNG liquefied natural gas

⚛️ Civil nuclear power

Renewable energy

⚡ Energy conversion and emission reduction

In particular, ASEAN is implementing the ASEAN Power Grid ASEAN Power Grid to connect cross-border power systems between member countries.

If LNG sources and energy technology from Russia are combined, Southeast Asia can significantly reduce the risk of electricity shortages during a period of strong demand driven by AI, data centers and manufacturing industries.

Transcontinental Logistics Infrastructure Is Strengthened

In addition to energy, ASEAN and Russia also focus on developing strategic transport corridors.

Transport route Benefits
INSTC North-South Shorten transportation time from Asia to Europe
Trans-Siberian Railway Increases continental logistics capacity
Trans-Asian Railway Connects ASEAN with Central Asia
Arctic shipping route Reduces long-term shipping costs

TheThe new transport route is expected to help ASEAN businesses access the Russian, Central Asian and European markets faster, reducing dependence on traditional maritime routes.

ASEAN Digital Economy Creates Huge Demand for Electricity

One of the notable points is that ASEAN has just completed negotiations on the ASEAN DEFA Digital Economy Framework Agreement.

ASEAN digital economy goals Value
Scale in 2030: 2,000 billion USD
Expected position Asia's leading digital economy center

The explosion of AI, cloud computing, data centers and chip manufacturing will lead to a sharp increase in electricity demand throughout the region.

This is why LNG, nuclear power and renewable energy are becoming top priority topics in high-level dialogues.

Vietnam Expands Investment Cooperation With Russia

On the sidelines of the conference, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung worked with Mr. Kirill Dmitriev, General Director of the Russian Direct Investment Fund.

The two sides discussed

✅ Technology transfer

✅ Scientific research

✅ Biomedical technology

✅ Vaccine production

✅ Investment in high-tech industry

Russia also expressed its desire to expand investment and connect more deeply with the Vietnamese market in the near future.

Market Perspective

If current agreements are successfully implemented, ASEAN could become aoperates the largest consumer of Russian LNG and energy technology in Asia.

In contrast, Russia will have the opportunity to access a market of more than 680 million people with the highest economic growth rate and energy demand in the world.

The combination of Russia's energy resources and ASEAN's growth can create a new development pole in the Eurasian economic space in the period 2026 - 2035.
