Bloomberg Businessweek Vietnam said PVOIL sent an urgent letter to US military and diplomatic agencies, requesting to allow the super tanker Agios Fanourios I to continue its journey to Vietnam.
The ship is transporting about 2 million barrels of Basra crude oil from Iraq to supply Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant, which contributes about 35–40% of domestic petroleum demand.
According to maritime tracking data, the ship passed through the Strait of Hormuz but then turned around in the Gulf of Oman after being asked by US forces to change course. PVOIL emphasized that Nghi Son's raw material inventory is at a very low level; If the delay continues, the factory is at risk of having to reduce or stop capacity.
⚠️ If this batch of oil is delayed for a long time:
1. Domestic petroleum supply may be under pressure.
2. Insurance and transportation costs will increase.
3. World oil prices continue to fluctuate strongly.
4. The domestic market may be indirectly affected.
This event shows that Vietnam's energy security is closely tied to global strategic transport routes. Just one delayed oil tanker can create a ripple effect on production, transportation and economic life.
