If the Strait of Hormuz is completely blocked, will Vietnam fall into a petroleum crisis in just a few weeks?

While the world is worried that the Middle East conflict will disrupt oil supplies, Vietnam has quietly activated an extremely smart plan. Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant has just received more than 950,000 barrels of Djeno crude oil from the Republic of Congo, transported directly across the Atlantic Ocean without going through the Strait of Hormuz.

This is not just a shipment. This is a strong statement that Vietnam is gradually reducing its dependence on a maritime route considered the most dangerous "bottleneck" in the world.

⛽ Why is this batch of oil so special?

Djeno oil is mined off the coast of Congo in the Gulf of Guinea.
The shipping route goes directly to Vietnam.
Not dependent on the Middle East.
Don't risk a Hormuz blockade.
Significantly increased flexibility for Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant.

Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant is currently one of the two largest energy pillars in the country, along with Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company in Dung Quat.

Advantages of the strategy of diversifying oil sources

✅ Reduce dependence on Kuwait oil
✅ Avoid geopolitical risks in the Middle East
✅ Optimize purchase price when the market fluctuates
✅ Increase operational flexibility
✅ Strengthen national energy security

⚠️ Challenges still remain

❌ Each type of crude oil has different characteristics, requiring adjustment of mixing technology
❌ Logistics costs from Africa can fluctuate
❌ World oil prices are still strongly affected by war and the USD exchange rate

Allied Japan also accelerated its support for Vietnam

Idemitsu Kosan plans to supply about 4 million additional barrels of crude oil from sources that do not pass through Hormuz. This amount of oil is equivalent to nearly 10 days of Vietnam's crude oil consumption.

Vietnam's energy import scale in the first 4 months of 2026

Value Indicator
The total amount of imported crude oil and petroleum is 8.1 million tons
Total turnover is 5.1 billion USD

Strategic significance

Receiving oil from Congo shows that Vietnam is shifting from the mindset of "buying oil wherever you can find it" to the mindset of "building a shock-resistant supply chain". This is an extremely important step to protect the economy against global fluctuations.

When the world was still worried about Hormuz, Vietnam proactively opened a completely new energy route from Africa to Africa.Go straight to Nghi Son.

An oil train today can be the foundation for the country's energy security for many years to come
