After weeks of near paralysis, oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is starting to increase again. However, the current recovery is still very low compared to the normal state, showing that geopolitical risks continue to weigh on the global energy supply chain.
According to Bloomberg Businessweek Vietnam, in recent days there have been a number of VLCC super ships, each carrying about 2 million barrels of crude oil, leaving the Hormuz area. This is the first positive signal after the period when this strategic maritime route was almost blocked.
WHY IS HORMUZ SO IMPORTANT?
The Strait of Hormuz is the "throat" of the world's energy industry:
• Transships about 20% of global oil
• Ships most of the LNG from Qatar and the UAE
• Directly affects the price of Brent oil, WTI and gas
⚠️ As long as traffic through Hormuz drops sharply, oil prices can immediately increase dramatically, leading to inflation and global transportation costs.
ACTUAL RECOVERY: INCREASED BUT STILL VERY LOW
Before the crisis:
• Dozens of large oil tankers pass back and forth every day
Currently:
• Only a few VLCC ships left the area
• Many ships still turn off AIS to avoid being tracked
• Insurance companies continue to charge high war fees
This means that the market has not really returned to normal.
IMPACT ON OIL PRICES
If the situation continues to improve:
✅ Oil prices may cool down
✅ Costreduced transportation
✅ Inflation pressure is less stressful
If conflict flares up again:
❌ Oil prices may exceed 110 USD/barrel
❌ LNG shortage in Asia
❌ Ship fees and insurance increased sharply
EFFECTS ON VIETNAM
Vietnam depends heavily on imports of crude oil, LPG and LNG for:
• Nghi Son petrochemical refinery
• Dung Quat oil filter
• LNG terminals such as Thi Vai
• Gas power plant
Any changes in Hormuz will directly impact:
• Domestic gasoline prices
• Electricity price
• Industrial production costs
WHO BENEFITS?
Countries outside the Middle East such as:
America
Brazil
Guyana
Congo
There is an opportunity to increase exports to compensate for the supply shortage.
CONCLUSION
Hormuz is gradually reopening, but the global energy market remains in a fragile state.
With just one unexpected military development, the entire oil and gas supply chain could be disrupted again.
Ships have begun to leave Hormuz.
⛽ But real stability is still ahead.
